In a scene reminiscent of a Cold War thriller, the tranquility of a Ukrainian village was shattered on December 15, 2023, when Serhii Batryn, a council member linked to President Zelenskyy's party, detonated three hand grenades during a routine village council meeting in Keretsky, a village in western Ukraine's mountainous Zakarpattia region.

The session was being broadcast live on Facebook when the incident occurred. Council members were engaged in a heated debate concerning their 2024 budget, the financial outcomes for this year, and a vote to decide on awarding a bonus to the council chief.

Approximately 90 minutes into the meeting, the video footage captures a village councilor, clad in a dark jacket, vociferously objecting to the budget. Subsequently, he exits the room, accompanied by another individual. After a brief absence, he reappears by the door, extracting several grenades from his jacket pockets.

Attempting to draw attention, he utters, "May I, may I?" before hurling the grenades into the center of the room. Moments later, they detonate.

The aftermath resembled a war zone, with 26 individuals wounded, one fatality and five in critical condition. The motivations behind this unprecedented act remain elusive, raising questions about the security and underlying tensions within local councils.

As investigations unfold, the village of Keretsky finds itself thrust into the spotlight. The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) swiftly categorized the incident as a 'terrorist' act, launching a comprehensive probe.

Ukraine, marked by the ongoing conflict with Russia, contends not only with the physical aftermath but also grapples with the psychological impact of an audacious attack in an ostensibly ordinary setting.

The blurred line between political discourse and outright violence raises concerns about whether local councils are evolving into battlegrounds for grievances.

According to the Transcarpathian region police, one person lost their life, underscoring the gravity of the situation. In a nation where access to military-grade weaponry is not uncommon, the investigation faces a complex landscape.
