In a groundbreaking move, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) team, Multan Sultans, has appointed Catherine Dalton as their fast-bowling coach.

This marks a significant milestone in cricket history as Dalton becomes the first female coach in the PSL and the first female fast-bowling coach for a major men’s team.

Dalton is the first female coach in the history of the Pakistan Super League.

Dalton, a seasoned county cricket player for Middlesex and Essex, brings with her a wealth of coaching experience. She has previously conducted masterclass courses at the Tareen Cricket Academy, which was established by Sultan’s owner Ali Tareen. She collaborated with Mohammad Ilyas, Arshad Iqbal, and Sameen Gul, all of whom are seamers with PSL experience.

Speaking to a source, she acknowledged the significance of her role, “I understand that this is a pioneering role,” she said, “and I’m aware of the profound impact this will have on the cricket world. It will inspire more women to venture into coaching, realizing that there is a pathway into men’s franchise cricket.”

An ECB-certified Level 3 Advanced Coach, Dalton has held coaching positions in the National Fast Bowling Academy in the UK and the Ultimate Pace Foundation in India. She has also worked with notable players like Deepak Chahar.

Dalton expressed her excitement about joining the franchise at the PSL. “It’s not lost on me the ground-breaking moment for a female fast-bowling coach to be working in a major men’s T20 franchise. I am very humbled by the opportunity and cannot wait to hopefully help make a difference on multiple levels,” she said.

Ali Tareen, Multan Sultans’ owner, praised Dalton’s skills and dedication. “Catherine has been part of our player-development program for almost five years now. I have seen how she has improved players firsthand. I always knew she would become a fast-bowling coach at a high level,” he said

It’s anticipated that ex-England bowler Alex Hartley will soon join the coaching staff of the Sultans. This team is overseen by Hijab Zahid, who was appointed as the PSL’s first female general manager earlier this year.

These appointments are part of Tareen’s vision for gender parity in coaching roles within the franchise. The move is expected to pave the way for more women to take up coaching roles in cricket.
