Widower seeks damages exceeding $50,000 under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act, highlighting the gravity of legal action and profound impact of the tragic incident
The recent lawsuit filed against Walt Disney Parks and Raglan Road Irish Pub & Restaurant has brought to light a devastating incident involving the untimely death of Dr. Kanokporn Tangsuan, a respected physician from New York.
Dr. Tangsuan, known as Amy, tragically passed away after dining at Raglan Road Irish Pub in Disney Springs, part of the Walt Disney World resort in Orlando, Fl, in October 2023.
Her husband, Jeffrey Piccolo, filed the lawsuit against the restaurant. The 19-page complaint alleges negligence on the part of the dining establishment and raises crucial questions about allergy safeguards in the hospitality industry, particularly at Disney World.
According to the lawsuit filed on Feb. 22, Dr. Tangsuan and her family chose Raglan Road because they believed it would accommodate her severe food allergies to dairy and nuts.
After repeated assurances from the waiter that certain dishes could be made allergen-free, she ordered a vegan fritter, scallops, onion rings and a vegan shepherd’s pie.
The family explicitly communicated her allergies and sought clarification about specific menu items, only to be served food that proved fatal.
The tragic turn of events occurred as Dr. Tangsuan began experiencing severe difficulty breathing and collapsed while shopping in the Disney Springs area after dinner.
Despite efforts to administer emergency treatment, including the use of an Epi-Pen and prompt medical assistance, she succumbed to anaphylaxis.
Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening allergic reaction that occurs when the body's immune system overreacts to a harmless substance, such as food, insect bites, or drugs. It affects multiple body systems, including the skin, respiratory system and cardiovascular system.
An autopsy report revealed heightened levels of dairy and nuts in Dr. Tangsuan's system. Additionally, it mentioned that the tests were conducted posthumously and their validity and significance have yet to be determined.
The lawsuit alleges negligence on the part of Raglan Road Irish Pub and Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. It highlights lapses in staff training, failure to adequately warn Dr. Tangsuan about allergens, and a lack of proper preparation of allergen-free food despite repeated requests.
In response to inquiries, Disney has not provided an immediate comment, leaving the public with unanswered questions about the safety measures in place at its dining establishments.
Piccolo is seeking damages exceeding $50,000 under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act. He also seeks compensation for mental anguish, loss of companionship and protection, loss of income, and medical and funeral expenses.
