The Egyptian forward received 90% of the votes from over 900 FWA members, the largest margin of victory this century
Mohamed Salah has made history again. The Liverpool and Egypt forward has been named the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year for the 2024-25 season, his third time winning the award. This puts him on par with Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, the only other player to win it three times.
According to the association, Salah received nearly 90% of the votes from more than 900 FWA members, "the biggest winning margin this century."
FWA chair John Cross said, “Rarely has there been a more popular winner than Mo. His overwhelming victory is just a reflection of an incredible season. He continues to rewrite the record books and his performances this season have obviously been key to Liverpool’s 20th title. It’s been a privilege watching him this season and it will be a privilege to welcome him to our dinner to celebrate his success.”
At 32 years old, Salah has shown no signs of slowing down. In the Premier League this season, he scored 28 goals and assisted 18, leading both charts. Across all competitions, he managed 33 goals and 23 assists in 49 games.
He is currently on track to win the Golden Boot and the Playmaker of the Season awards. These numbers bring him close to breaking the record for most goal contributions in a single Premier League season, currently held by Alan Shearer and Andy Cole with 47. Salah now has 46.
Salah’s teammate Virgil van Dijk came second in the FWA vote, followed by Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak and Arsenal’s Declan Rice. On the women’s side, Arsenal forward Alessia Russo won the award after her strong performance in the Champions League.
This award also comes at a time when Salah has led Liverpool to win the Premier League title with four games still left to play. It marks the club’s 20th league title, and their second since Salah joined in 2017.
Salah’s performances this season have been especially important under Liverpool’s new manager, Arne Slot, who took over after Jurgen Klopp. The Egyptian star has played a leadership role on the field, helping guide his team to success. Many thought Salah might be past his peak, but this season has proved otherwise.
This third FWA award places him above Liverpool legends like Kenny Dalglish and John Barnes, who each won it twice. Salah is also the first Liverpool player to win the FWA Footballer of the Year award since Jordan Henderson in the 2019-20 season.
The official presentation of the award will take place at the FWA Footballer of the Year dinner in London on May 22, 2025.
For many in the Muslim community, Salah continues to be a source of pride, not only for his performance on the field but also for how he carries himself off it. His success is not just a personal achievement, but a shared celebration for millions who see in him a symbol of dedication, faith, and humility.
