24-year-old documentarian finds refuge in Qatar after 108 days of capturing the harsh realities of the Gaza conflict on social media

Prominent Palestinian photojournalist Motaz Azaiza, widely recognized for his unfiltered coverage of the ongoing Israeli onslaught in Gaza, has successfully evacuated from the war-torn region. Azaiza, who accumulated over 18.3 million followers on Instagram, surpassing even US President Joe Biden, announced his departure on Tuesday via a heartfelt video on social media.
Azaiza's coverage focused on the civilian impact of Israeli air strikes, showcasing raw and unfiltered videos that brought attention to the plight of those affected by the conflict. Despite the challenges and dangers he faced, Azaiza continued to document the harsh realities of the war, gaining international acclaim for his efforts.
Before leaving the area devastated by Israel and killing more than 25000 innocent lives, Azaiza said in a video, “This is the last time you will see me with this heavy, stinky [press] vest. I decided to evacuate today. … Hopefully, soon I’ll jump back and help to build Gaza again.”

The 24-year-old journalist's evacuation took place through the Rafah Border Crossing to Egypt, where he boarded a Qatari military aircraft bound for Doha. While expressing a mix of relief and sorrow in his departure video, Azaiza hinted at multiple reasons for leaving, including threats from Israel and alleged offers to cease documenting the aggression.
Azaiza's journey resonated with millions globally, with his social media following skyrocketing during the 108 days he covered the conflict. Supporters, including celebrities like Kehlani and Karen Wazen, commended him for his bravery and dedication to shedding light on the human impact of the Gaza war.
This evacuation comes at a time when other journalists, like Al Jazeera's bureau chief Wael Dahdouh, have also left Gaza due to safety concerns. The departure of journalists highlights the challenges faced by those attempting to report from conflict zones and the importance of citizen journalists in humanizing such conflicts.

Last Saturday, Azaiza was honored with the TRT World Citizen Communicator Award. He chose to dedicate this award to the 115 Palestinian journalists who lost their lives in the conflict. Additionally, Azaiza was bestowed with the title of GQ Middle East’s Man of the Year for 2023 in November.
As Azaiza finds refuge in Qatar, his global community of followers await his next move, hoping for his safe return to continue documenting and ensuring the world bears witness to one of the deadliest sieges in modern times.
