Nick Kelly and Muhammad Abbas are the uncapped players included in the ODI squad
New Zealand has announced a 13-member squad for the upcoming ODI series against Pakistan, with Tom Latham set to lead the team in the absence of regular captain Mitchell Santner. The squad includes eight players who featured in the Champions Trophy final against India, while two uncapped players, Nick Kelly and Muhammad Abbas, have earned their maiden call-ups.
Opening batter Nick Kelly and left-arm pacer Muhammad Abbas, both standout performers for Wellington Firebirds in domestic cricket, have been rewarded for their consistent performances. However, New Zealand will be without several key players. Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway, Glenn Phillips, and Mitchell Santner are currently playing in the IPL, while Kane Williamson is unavailable due to personal reasons.
Squad Strength and Key Players
Despite the absence of some top names, New Zealand’s squad remains well-balanced. Will Young, who impressed with a century against Pakistan in the Champions Trophy, is expected to open alongside Kelly. The middle order will be anchored by experienced players like Daryl Mitchell, Michael Bracewell, and Nathan Smith.
The fast-bowling attack remains one of New Zealand’s strongest assets. Will O’Rourke, Jacob Duffy, Nathan Smith, and Ben Sears have already proven effective in the ongoing T20I series and will aim to continue their dominance in the ODIs.
The spin department is relatively inexperienced, with Michael Bracewell as the lead spinner and Adi Ashok providing an additional option. Ashok, a promising leg-spinner from Auckland Aces, returns to the national setup after making his debut against Bangladesh in 2023.
