A popular South Korean drama airing on MBC has found itself at the center of controversy after its finale was accused of making “thinly veiled references” to Israel’s war on Gaza.

The show, When the Phone Rings, premiered on Netflix on Nov. 22, 2024, and quickly gained acclaim for its unique blend of romance, suspense, and societal commentary.

However, its last episode, aired Jan. 4, sparked widespread backlash.

The drama, which follows the story of a rising politician, introduced two fictional nations, “Paltima” and “Izmael,” that many viewers believe are allegorical representations of Palestine and Israel.

In one scene, a fictional news report referenced airstrikes in Paltima and the kidnapping of Korean nationals in Izmael. Clips of the episode circulated across social media platforms, with users highlighting the apparent parallels to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Viewers reacted strongly to the scene, describing it as insensitive and inflammatory. Critics accused the showrunners of oversimplifying a deeply complex geopolitical issue, using it as a mere plot device. The decision to include such themes in a romantic thriller was seen as trivializing the ongoing violence and humanitarian crises in Gaza.

Fans and critics alike pointed out that the show appeared to align with one-sided narratives. The depiction of Paltima as aggressors and Izmael as victims was widely criticized for perpetuating stereotypes and misrepresenting the realities of the conflict.

Many pro-Palestinian viewers took to social media to express their disappointment, with some accusing the show of pushing Zionist propaganda.

“This is not just poor judgment—it’s an exploitative misrepresentation of a sensitive issue,” one user wrote.

The scene sparked coordinated campaigns on social platforms, with users calling for a boycott of the series and urging others to leave one-star reviews on rating platforms like Google.

The controversy surrounding When the Phone Rings has reignited debates about the responsibilities of media creators when addressing real-world issues. The power of storytelling lies in its ability to shape perceptions, but this influence comes with significant ethical obligations.

Critics have emphasized that creators need to exercise caution when weaving societal and political conflicts into fictional narratives.
