Monson stressed that his adoption of Islam followed a period of deep introspection and exploration into diverse religious beliefs
Jeffrey William Monson, the Russian mixed martial artist, boxer, and submission grappler, has declared that he has converted to Islam.
A widely shared video clip showed the 53-year-old athlete reciting the Shahadah, the Islamic declaration of faith, under the guidance of a scholar at an Islamic center in Moscow.
"I embraced Islam to be with my brothers and sisters in these difficult times in Palestine," said Monson, while he held back his tears.
"This journey has been one of profound transformation," Monson said. "Over the years, I have sought meaning and purpose in my life, and I found that Islam resonates with my values and beliefs. It provides me with a sense of peace and fulfillment that I have been searching for."
Monson stressed that his adoption of Islam followed a period of deep introspection and exploration into diverse religious beliefs.
"I deliberately adopt Islam. I want to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with my brothers during this complicated time. I have been thinking about it a lot, but this is a decisive step," Monsoon said.
Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, Monson is well known for his accomplishments in jiu-jitsu, where he earned world championship titles, and his successful career in mixed martial arts.
After renouncing his US citizenship in 2018 and obtaining Russian nationality, Monson has amassed a record of 60 wins, 26 losses, and one draw throughout his career.
